2016 Keystone Section visit to Europa Macchina

On March 26 we enjoyed an exciting Technical Session at Europa Macchina located in Lewisberry, PA.  27 members attended the event including some guests from the Northeast PA and Greater Washington sections.  Members arriving in their Mercedes were treated to special parking in front of the facility for a cool photo opportunity.  We were invited inside by our hosts Dennis and Lori Van Houten Frick for coffee and danish that they had provided for us.  Upon entering the building we were greeted with an amazing showroom of Morgan Motorcars and Moto Guzzi motorcycles.  After enjoying our pastries and coffee we sat for a presentation on collectible car insurance given by Wes Clegg of Hagerty Insurance.  Wes covered the importance of properly insuring your classic car as well as some of the other features offered by the Hagerty company.  Hagerty offers a Youth Judging Program, in which Section President, Larry Taylor’s son Robert is an active participant. It is wonderful to see programs like this that foster interest in the collector car hobby.

After the Hagerty presentation, Dennis started our tour of Europa Macchina, beginning with the Morgan Car and Moto Guzzi motorcycle dealership.  Dennis pointed out that there is renewed interest in the Morgan 3 wheelers and more Morgan US sales next year upon meeting DOT regulations.  The Moto Guzzi motorcycle franchise was also presented.  We saw some truly amazing bikes at Europa Macchina.

As we began to enter the shop area we were in awe of the beauty of the current restoration of a 1934 Derby Bentley Sports Saloon with a Barker Coach.  Dennis explained the amount of research involved in such a restoration.  They are truly preserving a piece of history.  The shop was impressive.  It was obvious that meticulous work was undertaken here.  Even a frame straightening rack, that was retired from Sun Motors, was restored to new condition, right down to the stickers, before being put into service.

In addition to the restoration shop we took a short walk down the road to Europa’s warehouse facility.  There were customer cars in various steps of restoration, as well as many of Dennis and Lori’s personal cars that were lovingly stored there.  There was truly something for everyone.

After leaving Europa Macchina, many of us headed to the nearby Hillside Cafe for lunch.

Many thanks to Dennis and Lori for an interesting, informative and fun Technical Session!
